The Tangled Bank project will create a new area of the Botanic Garden that puts Fife’s native habitats and plants at the heart of what we do. It will allow visitors to gain new insights into Fife’s nature and learn about threats to native habitats.  

When does the competition open and close?

The Tangled Bank Photo Competition opens on Friday 13th August 2021 and you can submit entries up until Sunday 31st October 2021 at 12pm.

What are the prizes?
  • Overall Winner:  A botanical stoneware plant pot made specially for us by St Andrews Pottery and a personal photography session at St Andrews Botanic Garden for you and a guest.
  • Category First Place: Personal photography session at St Andrews Botanic Garden for you and a guest and  a pack of 12 gift cards with winning photos
  • Category Runner Up: 2 month garden membership, pack of 12 cards with winning photos
  • Children/Young People First Place: St Andrews Botanic Garden backpack and pack of 12 cards with winning photos
  • Children/Young People Runner Up: St Andrews Botanic Garden beach towel and pack of 12 cards with winning photos
What are the categories of the competition?

Botanical study 

  • An image of a non-cultivated plant, taken within Fife, which reflects the Tangled Bank theme and the idea of “Plants in Detail”, i.e. close up images exploring the details of plants and plant structures

Plants living wild 

  • An image which includes a non-cultivated plant, taken within Fife, which reflects the Tangled Bank theme and the idea of “Plants in the Environment”, i.e. their interaction with other species and environmental factors

St Andrews Botanic Garden 

  • An image taken within St Andrews Botanic Garden reflecting the Tangled Bank theme

Smartphone 

  • Any photograph of a non-cultivated plant taken in Fife that fits the Tangled Bank theme that has been taken on a smartphone or tablet. 

Under 11s

  • Any photograph taken in Fife that fits the Tangled Bank theme
  • Photographer should be age 11 and under as of 13th August 2021. 

Under 18s 

  • Any photograph taken in Fife that fits the Tangled Bank theme
  • Photographer should be under 18 years old as of 13th August 2021. 
Can I enter multiple categories?

Yes, please do! But please only enter each photograph into one category that you feel it fits best. If you enter it into more than one category we can only consider it once.

How much does it cost to enter and how do I pay?

A single entry costs £2 or three entries can be bought for £5. This will go towards the Tangled Bank Project and can be paid below.

What format does my photo need to be in?

Your photograph should be entered as a JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg) file, smaller than 12MB. It should have a resolution of >1900 pixels along its shortest edge.

Can I enter photos I took before the competition launched?

Yes, photographs taken prior to the launch of the competition can be entered. We welcome photos taken in summer or autumn of any year

Why can’t I enter photos from outside Fife?

The aim of the Tangled Bank project is to celebrate and educate about Fife’s native habitats and species so we have chosen to focus on plants found in Fife in line with this theme

Why can’t I enter photos of cultivated plants/plants in my garden?

The aim of the Tangled Bank project is to celebrate and educate about Fife’s native habitats and species so we have chosen to focus on native plant species in line with this theme
